Dr. Sbaitso - Free Download Ancient DOS App

Nostalgia

Dr. Sbaitso is an artificial intelligence speech synthesis program released in 1992 by Creative Labs for DOS-based personal computers.

It was more of a heuristic-based chatbot running scripted responses rather than actual learning or intelligence.

You can interact with Dr. Sbaitso like you're consulting to a Shrink (Psychiatrist). It won't tell you direct solution, but it's so funny, you'll laugh, maybe. It's like chatting with your computer.

Type whatever comes in your mind to Dr. Sbaitso, and he will respond to your typed words/sentence.

How to Use in Windows 11

  1. Download DOSBox.

Pick the Windows — Win32 installer.

Then install it on your machine.

  2. Once installed, open DOSBox:

    DOSBox Terminal
  3. Extract DR.SBAITSO.zip to an easy-to-type path. For instance, the root of C drive, D drive, or other drive.

In this example, I use drive D to keep the sbaitso folder.

    Sbaitso folder path
  4. We mount that D:\sbaitso folder to DOSBox's C drive. Type this in DOSBox terminal and hit Enter:

    MOUNT C D:\sbaitso
    Mount folder in DOSBox
  5. We move to C folder in DOSBox:

    C:

Once we're in C drive, when we do dir, we will see all the files.

  6. Run Dr. Sbaitso by typing

    SBAITSO2.EXE
    Synth

On my machine, it said Synthesizer Not installed — it's fine, we can still type our name, but without any sound from the program.

  7. Done. We can interact with Dr. Sbaitso. Without any sound. 🤣 Oh, the irony.

As Dr. SBAITSO was bundled by Creative Labs with early Sound Blaster 16/Pro cards. Its whole point was to show off the card's text-to-speech (TTS) capabilities. To produce the speech.

Doctor Ossbita

I made a program like Dr. Sbaitso, it's called Doctor Ossbita, for browser. Let's compare them. 😂
